I was 21 years old when I had my portrait taken by Karsh on Nov. 14, 1941. It was during the war, and I was working as a stenographer at the Bank of Canada, earning money for the first time. I remember that Karsh was definitely in vogue, he was very well-known in the city; he was taking pictures of all the Ottawa girls. I went in person to book the appointment at his Hardy Arcade studio on Sparks St. He told me to make sure to wear a white shirt. My sister Margaret curled my hair for this special occasion; I usually wore it in a page-boy style. I remember Karsh was very nice, telling me how to sit, how to pose. It wasn’t a very big studio, and the photo session didn’t take too long, perhaps half an hour. I’ve always felt very fortunate to have had that picture taken.

Submitted for inclusion in the Portraits by Karsh are the attached scanned portraits by Karsh.
Attachments include: an Advertising Portrait of Walter Schultz, (an older and now deceased brother of Viola) were scanned from a page taken from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company house newspaper / magazine "Northern Star" for company advertising. It was among the personal effects of Viola until her death. Walter was an executive with the Met. Life Insurance company and was selected by Karsh to be the subject. The handwriting (not mine) indicates it was published in 1947 .
As for the Photogenicity of the family may I add that a younger sister was the same age as the movie star Dianna Durbin and was often mistaken to be the actress. Sadly to report that all are deceased, all by "heart" problems as that too was a family trait .
I hope that this contributes to the Karsh celebration.
Sincerely,
W. Roy Hindle
